Democrats rammed their budget bills through the Minnesota House, including their horrible, no good very bad tax increase. Here is basic information on each of the bills as they left the House floor.
This was a dramatic vote on the House floor with DFLer Tom Rukavina orally switching his vote at the last second in order for the bill to pass. No Republicans voted for this clunker, which Rep. Seifert called the worst bill he's seen since he came to the Capitol in 1996.
While Democrats are trying to raise taxes, Republicans are sending taxpayers a clear message that we will not take more money out of your pocket during this recession.
Last week, House Republican Deputy Minority Leader Steve Smith was part of a legislative panel with DFL leaders addressing more than 30 of Minnesota's most prolific job creators. Here is an excerpt from Rep. Smith's message:
"The message we've delivered all session is this: Govern within the four walls of not raising taxes if you want our support. Crossing the aisle in search of getting Republican votes to raise taxes will leave you empty handed. We expect to generate more than $30 billion in taxes in the coming year and extracting more from our citizens is a non-starter – with all of us.
But, let me also be clear – I do not suggest that our caucus is choosing to not participate - we will vocally have our voice heard in how we restrain government to live within its means.
Our constituents are no different than most of yours - they are consumers, they are working families - they are committed to their community. We know that Minnesota voters want fairness, a government that lives within its means, focuses on problems that government can solve, and that leaves them free to purse their dreams and passions.
These working men and women of Minnesota are counting on the 47 of us to be an unstoppable force for truth, justice and the American way.
We will be.
